Public Comment Highlights Call for Prayer in Commission Meetings

Farmington, Utah – During public comment at Tuesday’s Davis County Commission meeting, resident Peter Cannon urged the board to consider beginning their meetings with prayer. Cannon observed that while the Pledge of Allegiance and the words “In God We Trust” are part of Commission meetings, prayer is not.
He pointed out that many government bodies across the country open with prayer and encouraged the Commission to follow suit. Commissioner John Crofts later thanked Cannon, noting that many Davis County city councils already include prayer and that the U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed the appropriateness of public prayer.

Health Department Receives State Funding for Programs

Farmington, Utah – The Davis County Commission approved three agreements on Tuesday supporting public health programs.
A donation agreement with Tracy Gregory will provide a Lapidary Slab Saw to Aging Services.
An amendment with the Utah Department of Health and Human Services brings in $6,399 for viral hepatitis surveillance and prevention.
Another amendment with the state provides $103,815 to support county immunization programs.
All items were recommended by Health Director Brian Hatch and passed unanimously.

Contract Approved for Special Legal Services

Farmington, Utah – Commissioners approved a contract with attorney J. Robert Latham, J.D., P.C. to provide legal services in special cases.
The contract, sponsored by the Indigent Defense Commission, covers private petitions to terminate parental rights when the state has chosen not to move forward. The agreement, approved through December 2026, sets compensation at $75 per hour.

Sheriff’s Office Training Agreement Moves Forward

Farmington, Utah – The Davis County Commission approved a training agreement with Jennifer Nenetl Rodriguez Campos for Special Functions Officer and Basic Corrections Officer certifications.
The agreement, recommended by the Sheriff’s Office, provides $17,660 in training funding over a two-year period beginning at the time of hire. Commissioners approved the measure unanimously.

Western Sports Park Secures New Events

Farmington, Utah – Davis County’s Western Sports Park will soon host a series of major sporting events thanks to agreements approved by the County Commission on Tuesday.
Highlights include:

  • A Utah Jazz Basketball Tournament on October 4, 2025.
  • USA Gymnastics Trampoline and Tumbling Competitions scheduled in February, March, and April 2026.
  • A Porsche Club timed rally course on September 28, 2025.
  • A Sports Car Club of America rally series running September through November 2025.
    Together, the events are expected to generate more than $45,000 in revenue for the county.

Property Tax Register Approved by Board of Equalization

Farmington, Utah – Meeting as the Board of Equalization, the Davis County Commission approved the August 19, 2025 Property Tax Register.
The register, prepared by County Controller Scott Parke, includes adjustments, abatements, and corrections submitted by both the Controller’s and Assessor’s Offices. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the register.

Closing Announcements from the Commission

Farmington, Utah – Commissioners closed Tuesday’s meeting with several announcements and updates.
Commissioner John Crofts announced a Town Hall on Transparency scheduled for September 18, 6–8 PM at the Davis County Memorial Courthouse. He encouraged residents to attend and said he hopes local media will be present.
Commission Chair Lorene Kamalu congratulated the Clerk’s Office for running a successful primary election and celebrated the opening of a new elementary school in Bountiful as students returned for the fall term.
Kamalu also spotlighted upcoming library events, including a visit from Holocaust survivor Ben Lesser on August 27 and a traveling exhibit from the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. this fall.
Kamalu introduced Michelle Hicks as the county’s new Animal Care Director, noting Hicks’ experience with Salt Lake County and her strong commitment to community involvement.
